Man of the Month - Dewey Faulkner

"What you see is what you get."
You can’t judge a book by its cover.”

Although these two proverbs seem to contradict each other – they also both give a pretty accurate look at this months Man of the Month – Dewey Faulkner.

Dewey was born February 5, 1944 in Denver, Colorado.  His dad and mom (Theron and Florelee) raised him and his 2 younger brothers (Steven & Bob) in North Denver.  Dad labored as a molder (pouring hot iron into molds to make shower drains), while Mom worked in Rene’s  Grocery Store.

Dewey recalls attending the Jesus Saves Church as a youngster, going to Sunday School – and, in general, being pretty scared of his preacher, Mr. Mildel, who delivered a steady measure of “fire and brimstone.”  He also remembers that there was a male side of the church – and a female.

Dewey went to the Ashland Elementary School, then the Horace Mann Middle School, and the North Denver High School.  When he was 12 ½ he took on a job as a sweeper boy at the Ashland Elementary School – a job he kept until he was 18.  There he cleaned the 28 rooms of the old structure built in 1890 that once served as the high school.  He also spent his summers working with his dad as a molder’s assistant.

When Dewey was in junior high, he played in the concert band, participated in a jewelry activity, and ran track; however, when he was 15, he began a regiment of workouts at Less Workman’s Gym that was 5 blocks from his sweeper’s job.  He recalls working until 8:30 in the evening and then working out at the gym until 2 A.M. every day.

During the summer of 63 – Dewey was walking down the hall in summer school when he saw an attractive young girl stop to get a drink at the fountain.  He first noticed that she had “nice calves”  and commented to a friend that he was going to marry that girl.  Dewey remembers his friend’s quizzical look as he questioned, “but you don’t even know her.”

Soon after, while both were standing on a crowded bus ride home, the bus suddenly stopped and Dewey seized the moment as he fell to the floor, knocking over a friend of the girls.  Still, it was the smile he got from his future bride the he treasured from the experience.
Soon Dewey and Bernie began dating.
Deweys workouts began to pay off as he entered body building competitions with immense success in 1963.  He captured the title of Junior Mr. Colorado at a Championship Body Building event.  He recollects participating in 64 contests through to 1972.  One competition in 64 was for Mr. Midwestern USA, in Lyons, Nebraska and found him placing 3rd by .2 of a point, while he didn’t even compete in a required weight lifting portion of the contest.  He was Mr. Colorado in 65, and then moved to Trenton, Michigan where he and Bernie were married on New Years Eve of 1965.

He won competitions that gave him the title of Mr. Detroit, and Toledo’s “Most Muscular.”  In 1972, Dewey recalls entering a contest in Michigan City Indiana for Mr. USA.  He ended up placing 8th; however, he was dismayed by the influence of steroid use by many of his competitors. He can still see images of guys with biceps bigger than his waist.

Dewey and Bernie moved to the Belleville area in 1969.  When asked what he liked most about his bride, he quickly said, “everything.’ ‘She is my best friend, my wife, and my lover.”  They had 2 sons, John Allen and Dewey John, both born at Wyandotte General Hospital.

Dewey’s work history includes 23 years with Allied Groceries.  He was an assistant manager in both the produce and dairy departments at Wrigley’s, a produce manager at Kroger, and worked as an assistant manager in several areas at Chatham until they went out of business.  In 1984 he began working 3 jobs – 1. cleaning and painting for Detroit Fiber Casting; 2. with the Mayflower Hotel in Plymouth; 3. Painting signs for various businesses.  He was working 6-7 days a week.  Then he began working as a custodian for the Livonia Public Schools and worked there for 21 years.  He started at Frost Junior High, then worked at Franklin HS, before going to Coliege Elementary.  Dewey began helping students with art projects and painting murals around the school, when, about 6 years ago, his principal ask him to teach an art class during the last period.  Soon he was instructing the last ½ hour of the day and beyond.  Today, he is retired, but still teaching an adult art class on Friday afternoons at the Van Buren Senior Center.  He has between 7 and 15 students each week.

Dewey’s favorite food is “all hamburgers;” however, the best are the ones at home.  The restaurant he prefers is Bob Evans, while his favorite vacation was one touring Michigan, seeing many of the states lighthouses in the lower peninsula.

His hobbies include his art efforts, and CCW handguns.  His goal is to be a better Christian person, and to help others.  He went up in a 1928 Curtis Airplane at Willow Run, and would like to go up again.

The thing Dewey likes best about the 1st United Methodist Church is its people.  He has been active as a Stephen Minister, working on the Memorial Garden, and as a Bingo caller at Willow Creek.   He has painted the pictures for the last supper drama, and helped 2 years with the youth on Wednesday nights. He also helps with Vacation Bible School and attends 4 Bible Classes a week.

His Mens Club activities including painting on projects around the church and teaming with Dick Gamble to paint a background for our Father/Son, and Daughter Banquet pictures.

The person who influenced him the most is Christ.  Dewey states that when you look to people – they sometimes falter.  He feels he has had a wonderful life and feels that God has blessed him.
