STEPHEN MINISTRY
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of Stephen Ministries is to help congregations equip God’s people for spiritual growth and Christ-centered, practical ministry in today’s world.
Reverend Kenneth Haugk in St. Louis Missouri started the Stephen Ministry program in 1975. As the Pastor of a large congregation he saw that the needs for care exceeded what he alone was able to provide. Dr. Haugk developed the Stephen Minister Training Program to equip loving, caring caregivers to provide a caring ministry. Since that time Stephen Ministry has grown to encompass 9,000 congregations of more than 100 denominations. More than 50,000 Stephen Leaders have been trained as well as 450,000 Stephen Ministers who have served 1,000,000 care receivers. Stephen Ministers are taught that they are not there to solve problems rather to listen, share, and to care for their care receivers. The 50 hour training course that every Stephen Minister must complete focus on many topics. The topic receiving the most training is confidentiality. Utmost care is given so that only the Stephen Minister Leader and the Pastor, knows the care receiver that a Stephen Minister has. Belleville First United Methodist Church has been a Stephen Ministry Congregation since 1982. We currently have 14 active Stephen Ministers. If you are going through a transitional period in your life and need someone to talk to, someone who cares. Please contact Reverend Jim, Diane Matz, Tom Hazen or Cathie Cameron in the church office.
